Secretary: Carol Mitchel

Carol grew up on a small farm in western Alberta and had her first pony, a tough Shetland-Welsh pony cross, when she was seven years old. Apparently at the age of three or so she announced that all the four-legged animals (including cattle, sheep, goats and the occasional deer) she saw in fields were horses and cried when she couldn’t have them all. This was the start of her successful four-year campaign to get her first horse and the start of a life-long equine love affair. She had to give up horses during her early Army career, as the Army didn’t pay her enough to afford board and the costs of moving them every few years when a posting change happened. She prevailed however, reacquiring horses after a 15-year hiatus, and has had horses ever since. She continues to enjoy the company of horses and has one OTTB, Dexter. While in the Army, she met and married the love of her life, Eric, and now resides in West Knox County.

Parliamentarian: Mellissa McKenzie

Melissa McKenzie has been a member of CDCTS for over 10 years, and has served on the board in various capacities for most of that time. She is an active dressage trainer, competitor, and coach, working out of her own Runaway Farms in Kingston TN. Melissa enjoys working with all types of horses and ponies, and focuses most of her time on training young horses and working with problem horses. She has 2 wonderful client horses; Dusters Legacy (Pilgrim) owned by Mary Sivley, who she hopes to debut at 3rd level this year, and Ebony Von Grace (Ebony) owned by Gwen and Jamie Hilla, who will be showing 2nd level this year after competing at Regional Championships at 1st level in 2014. Both horses started training with Melissa because of training problems, and have become consistent and competitive dressage horses with correct, classical dressage work.  Melissa trains regularly with JJ Tate.

Member At Large: Rita Dunn

Rita Dunn is a USDF Certified Instructor T-2. She formerly a NAHRA Certified Instructor for both physical and cognitive disabilities. Rita has earned Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals. In 2004 she purchased D Grande Finale as a lightly started 3 year old gelding and has showed successfully through Grand Prix. Rita ran her own riding school for able bodied students as well as being head instructor and facility manager for Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program for 35 years.
